Stay in control!

Below are some great options suitable for any price range to help you quickly find a suitable controller. However, if you’re bamboozled by any of the terms or functions, check out this article on choosing the right MIDI controller for you.

Budget Options

Getting a cheap MIDI controller is the most practical choice if you are just trying your hand at making digital music. Since cheaper models come in compact sizes, they are portable and easy to carry around, letting you capture your ideas or even perform virtually anywhere. Click here for a round up of interfaces from €100 – €300 on Music Radar.

SIZE MATTERS: Note that most of these controllers come in a variety of sizes. The number that follows the model name (for example the Behringer UMA25) usually denotes the number of keys: 25, 46, 61 and 88 key models are standard.

Recommended mid-range controllers

The Novation Impulse 61 comes well recommended by Sound On Sound, and clocks in at around €350. Read this review to see what it’s all about, and click here to see current prices on Thomann.

Hammer Action / Fully Weighted Keyboards

You’ll need to fork out quite a bit more for a realistic feeling keyboard, but if your keyboard playing merits the extra cost, check out the Akai MPK88. It clocks in at around €740 here on Thomann, and you can read a good review here on Music Radar.

The right interface for you

There is no denying that home and project studio owners have never had a better range of audio and MIDI interfaces to choose from, whatever their budget or feature requirements. Below are 3 of the most popular budget options, perfect for the novice producer. You can also click here to see some more options compared.

Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 (€139)

For the price, the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is bang on the money. It’s a simple 2-in, 2-out USB interface on a budget. For most home studios (unless your setup comprises of a number of synthesisers), 2 inputs and 2 outputs is all you are going to need.
Read a full review
Buy the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 on Thomann

M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R (€355)

If you want to record multiple sources simultaneously, this rack-mountable interface is a winner for piles of connectivity at a low cost.

RME Fireface UCX (€1,139)

For those looking to get a little more serious with their production, this interface offers high quality connectivity and conversion, but costs a little more than its wallet friendly counterparts.

Take a look at this great 1979 BBC documentary, “The New Sound of Music”. It charts the development of recorded music from the first barrel organs, onto the concepts of musique concrete and electronic music development with voltage-controlled oscillators making up the analogue synthesizers of the day. The New Sound of Music is a fascinating insight into the birth of the world of recorded and electronic music and features some very classic British analogue synthesizers.

Student Testimonials

“I have been meaning to dip my toe in the water of music production for years but never knew where to start. I eventually decided on a course in Logic Pro 9 with Secret School of Sound and I’m glad to say that I made the right choice. Their introductory course was pitched exactly at my level(beginner) and I really benefitted from their low tutor/pupil ratio which in my class was 1:2. This ensured that we both had the tutors undivided attention at all times which was great.

Where the Secret School of Sound really shines is in the obvious in-depth knowledge of its instructors – they really know their stuff and just as importantly, they explain the concepts in a simple and concise manner which is clear and easy to understand. They have just the right balance of theory training and practical exercises to keep things interesting. The tutors are extremely knowledgeable and they create a great learning atmosphere by checking regularly that you understand before moving on and asking questions is always encouraged which is great to see.

So what did I get from the course? It gave me a firm grasp of the basic fundamentals of music production using Logic Pro 9 so, job done! I would recommend the Secret School of Sound to anyone who wants to get started in music production or DJ’ing. They’re reasonably priced, they know their stuff and they are good at sharing their knowledge with others – what more could you ask for? I’ll definitely be back for another course.”
Austin Molloy
(Logic Pro Student 2012)

“I felt the course was great value for money, and I can honestly say that my skill set and understanding of Logic studio has dramatically increased. I was particularly impressed with my tutor who made understanding the course content easy & the lengths he went to delivering the content whether it was part of the course for that evening or an on the spot question which usually had nothing to do with that evenings schedule. I really enjoyed my time at the school & I will definitely recommend it to anybody who wishes to learn or further their music tech education.”
Aaron Smyth

“I would highly recommend Secret School of Sound to any one who wants to know how to use music software. A lot of courses these days can be a bit all over the place but Secret School of Sound is run very well and professionally. Ross knows his software very well. 10/10″

Something’s coming…

Over the last few days the music production community has started to buzz with talk of the recently announced music performance and production system, Bitwig Studio. The developers, Bitwig, are a Berlin music startup founded by former Ableton employees.

Bitwig Studio is in development and officially ‘coming soon’ – but it already looks familiar. Imagine what you’d expect Ableton Live 9 to look like, throw in a few off the best features from Logic and Cubase, and you’ve got Bitwig.

Feature List

Here are the features for this new live performance and production DAW:

Multitrack recording – Record and produce your music in an intuitive workflow. Bitwig Studio’s arranger is a mix of editing power, ease of use and flexibility.

Arranger clip launcher – A non-linear environment that lets you trigger clips in real-time.

Mixer clip launcher – An alternative view of the clip launcher aligned with the mixer, optimized for live performance and DJing

Generic tracks – Tracks accept any kind of material. Audio and notes can live on the same track. You can bounce note clips to audio in place.

Clip automation – In addition to traditional track automation, automation can also be recorded and packaged inside clips, both on the clip launcher and the arranger.

Per-note automation – Pitch variations can be applied to individual notes directly in the piano roll. You can also edit a note’s panning, timbre and volume curves.

Simultaneous multitrack editing – Edit contents of multiple tracks together. You can see them all juxtaposed and isolate only the ones you want to edit

Multiple audio events per clip – An audio clip can contain multiple audio events. You can chop and edit audio files inside a clip non-destructively and loop it all as a package.

Real-time time stretching – Bitwig Studio’s proprietary technology lets you match any audio material to the document tempo and get everything in sync.

‘World-class’ sound devices

Device nesting – Devices can contain other devices, and the whole package can be saved as a preset. Many of preset instruments and effects use nesting in new and powerful ways.

32/64 bit VST support – Use your VST plug-ins. In case of a plug-in crash, a protective mechanism prevents the application from crashing and you from losing your work.

Metadata-based browser – Find your musical material quickly. Add tags and search by content type.

Open multiple documents – Exchange musical material between documents. Drag and drop, copy and paste back and forth.

Multi-monitor support – Bitwig Studio offers flexible screensets to take full advantage of your monitor configuration

‘Slick’ user interface – Bitwig Studio’s user interface has been designed with the goal of making your music creation experience ‘fun and intuitive’.

So, again, looking like the best bits of Ableton, Logic and Cubase all sewn together in one pretty package. Plus, Bitwig has several more interesting features under development. The following are planned for a later release:

LAN multi-user jamming – Multiple users can jam on the same document, and everything can be captured in the document’s arrangement

Multi-user music production over the internet – Multiple users can compose music on the same document from different locations. Bitwig Studio keeps everything in sync.

Native modular system – Create your own instruments and effects or modify existing ones. Design their appearance and share them with the world.
